Virginia Evans wins the Women's Prize for Fiction 2026
The Correspondent, a debut novel told in letters, won the 2026 Women's Prize for Fiction and its £30,000 award.
Virginia Evans won the 2026 Women's Prize for Fiction for The Correspondent, announced on 11 June 2026 in London. She receives £30,000 and the statuette known as the Bessie. The American writer's book is her debut novel.
The Correspondent is an epistolary novel. It is made up of letters written by Sybil Van Antwerp, who is 73, to friends, family and real authors, through which she deals with her past and her relationships.
The judges were chaired by Julia Gillard, with Mona Arshi, Salma El-Wardany, Cariad Lloyd and Annie Macmanus. The other shortlisted books were Flashlight by Susan Choi, Dominion by Addie E Citchens, The Mercy Step by Marcia Hutchinson, Kingfisher by Rozie Kelly and Heart the Lover by Lily King. It is the second year running that the prize has gone to a debut.
A novel in letters is an old form, and it is pleasing to see it succeed again. For writers, the result is a reminder that form can carry a book as much as plot does, and that an older protagonist is no obstacle to a wide readership. For publishers, two consecutive debut winners say something about how open this prize is to new names.
