Women's Prize for Fiction 2026 shortlist is announced

Four debuts and four books from independent presses make the 2026 Women's Prize for Fiction shortlist, chaired by Julia Gillard.

The shortlist for the 2026 Women's Prize for Fiction was announced on 22 April 2026. The six books are Flashlight by Susan Choi (Jonathan Cape), Dominion by Addie E Citchens (Europa Editions UK), The Correspondent by Virginia Evans (Michael Joseph), The Mercy Step by Marcia Hutchinson (Cassava Republic Press), Kingfisher by Rozie Kelly (Saraband) and Heart the Lover by Lily King (Canongate).

Four of the six are debut novels, and four come from independent publishers. Flashlight had been shortlisted for the 2025 Booker Prize.

The judges are chaired by Julia Gillard, the former prime minister of Australia, with Mona Arshi, Salma El-Wardany, Cariad Lloyd and Annie Macmanus. The winner, who receives £30,000 and the statuette known as the Bessie, was due to be announced on 11 June 2026 in Bedford Square Gardens, London.

Independent presses account for a modest share of the market but a large share of this list, which is encouraging for authors who have gone to smaller publishers, and for the publishers themselves. With four debuts, the list also points readers firmly towards new writers rather than established names.
