Daniel Kraus wins the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction with Angel Down
Angel Down, Daniel Kraus's First World War novel told in a single sentence, has won the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
Daniel Kraus has won the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for Angel Down, published by Atria Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. The prizes were announced on 4 May 2026.
Angel Down is set during the First World War and follows a group of soldiers who come upon a fallen angel on the battlefield. The whole novel is written as a single unbroken sentence. The Pulitzer board described it as combining allegory, magical realism and science fiction.
The fiction finalists were Audition by Katie Kitamura (Riverhead Books) and Stag Dance: A Quartet by Torrey Peters (Random House). Kraus has written widely in fantasy, horror and young adult fiction, and has collaborated with the film-makers George Romero and Guillermo del Toro.
Why it matters: a formally unusual novel by a writer known mainly for horror, fantasy and young adult fiction is a notable choice for the Pulitzer. It suggests that the lines between literary and genre fiction are less fixed on prize panels than they were, which is relevant for writers who work across both.
