Nobody's Girl is Overall Book of the Year at the British Book Awards 2026
Virginia Roberts Giuffre's posthumous memoir Nobody's Girl, written with Amy Wallace, won Overall Book of the Year at the British Book Awards on 11 May 2026.
Nobody's Girl, the memoir of Virginia Roberts Giuffre written with the journalist Amy Wallace and published by Doubleday, was named Overall Book of the Year at the British Book Awards on 11 May 2026, at Grosvenor House in London. It had first won the Non-Fiction: Narrative category.
Giuffre died in 2025, before the book's publication. According to The Bookseller's awards site, the judges praised Doubleday's handling of a posthumous publication, noting that the publisher had had only six weeks to prepare its campaign.
Other winners included A. F. Steadman as Author of the Year and Dav Pilkey as Illustrator of the Year. This year's awards also introduced new categories, including Romantic Fiction and Science Fiction and Fantasy; the latter went to SenLinYu's Alchemised.
The result recognises a survivor's account and, unusually, the care taken by its publisher in bringing it out after the author's death. Publishing a book of this kind raises legal, ethical and editorial questions that most books never face, and the judges' attention to how it was done, not only what it said, is worth noting for anyone who works on sensitive non-fiction.
