Nobel Prize in Literature 2025 announcement

The Swedish Academy announced the 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature on 9 October in Stockholm. The prize was awarded to the Hungarian author László Krasznahorkai, for a compelling and visionary body of work that, in the midst of apocalyptic terror, reaffirms the power of art.

Krasznahorkai is known in English for novels including Satantango and The Melancholy of Resistance, and for long, unbroken sentences that have attracted a devoted readership. He had already won the Man Booker International Prize in 2015.

For publishers of translated and speculative fiction, his work is a good example of how writing with apocalyptic and uncanny elements can sit at the centre of literary recognition.
