National Poetry Day is the UK's largest annual celebration of poetry, organised by the Forward Arts Foundation with support from Arts Council England and other funders. It reaches schools, libraries, cultural venues and broadcasters across the country.
The 2026 edition takes place on Thursday 1 October with the theme Wonder. Around the day, the foundation provides poems and teaching resources on the theme and gathers online and in-person events from schools, libraries and venues into a single listing.
Anyone can take part: the National Poetry Day website explains how, lists online and in-person events, and offers poems and resources on the theme. Writers can share new work on the day, and bookshops and libraries can plan displays and readings.
