National Poetry Day was founded in 1994 and is run by the Forward Arts Foundation, a poetry charity. Each year it sets a theme and invites schools, libraries, bookshops and the public to share poems.
The 2024 edition took place on Thursday 3 October with the theme Counting. Highlights included a large online poetry lesson led by the author Laura Mucha, joined by more than 1,000 schools in several countries, poems displayed at London Bridge station with Apples and Snakes, and a Poetry Society open mic at the Poetry Café.
Anyone can take part by reading, writing or sharing a poem on the day. The foundation publishes free resources and an events listing, and bookshops and libraries often mark the date with displays and readings.
