The International Booker Prize rewards a single work of fiction translated into English and published in the UK or Ireland, with the £50,000 prize divided equally between author and translator. The 2025 winner was announced on Tuesday 20 May in the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern in London.

The judges, chaired by the novelist Max Porter, chose Heart Lamp by Banu Mushtaq, translated by Deepa Bhasthi. The book gathers twelve stories, written over three decades, about the lives of women in patriarchal communities in southern India. It was the first short story collection to win the prize and the first winner translated from Kannada. Bhasthi became the first Indian translator to win.

For small publishers, the prize is a reminder of how much of the most discussed fiction in English begins life in another language.
