Hay Festival is held each spring in Hay-on-Wye, the small town on the Welsh border known for its second-hand bookshops. The organisation that runs it also stages festivals in several other countries, and 2025 marked twenty years of that international work.
The 2025 edition, the festival's 38th in Hay, ran from 22 May to 1 June with more than 600 events: new fiction and non-fiction, politics, science, history and performance. Recurring strands included a morning news review, conversations on climate and sustainability, and a Sports Day. A free Schools Programme opened the festival on 22 and 23 May, and the programme marked 250 years since Jane Austen's birth.
It suits readers who want to spend several days with a large, varied programme, and writers who want to see how books are presented to a wide and engaged audience.
