Details and tickets

Dickensian London: The Magic Lantern City is the Charles Dickens Museum's exhibition from 21 October 2026 to 18 April 2027. It examines how closely Dickens is bound up with our picture of London, from how the city looked to the people who lived in it and the sights, sounds and smells of its streets.

The exhibition follows the city through his early journalism and later novels, and considers how he used his writing to expose poor living and working conditions. Objects on display include Dickens's walking stick, a copy of Barnaby Rudge bound in wood from Newgate prison, an original sketch of Fagin, his manuscript for Oliver Twist and a door knocker from his childhood London home.

Admission to the museum, Dickens's former home in Doughty Street, includes the exhibition. It is sponsored by the Murray family and the Dickens Fellowship.
