The Times and Sunday Times Cheltenham Literature Festival is run by Cheltenham Festivals, the charity that also organises the town's jazz, music and science festivals. It describes itself as the longest-running literature festival in the world, and 2024 marked its 75th anniversary.
Across ten days in October the programme ran to more than 400 events: new fiction and poetry, established authors, political debate and non-fiction talks, centred on a festival village in Montpellier Gardens. At least a quarter of the programme was free, including drop-in family activities, book clubs and post-event discussion spaces, and the Lit Crawl around town.
It suits readers who want a broad mix of events in one place, and writers who want to see how authors and interviewers handle a live audience. The free spaces make it possible to spend a day on site without buying a ticket for every session.
