The Booker Prize is awarded each year to a single work of long-form fiction written in English and published in the UK or Ireland. The 2024 winner was announced on Tuesday 12 November at Old Billingsgate in London, with the ceremony broadcast live on BBC Radio 4's Front Row.
The panel, chaired by the artist and writer Edmund de Waal, chose Orbital by Samantha Harvey from a shortlist of six that included five women, the most in the prize's history. Harvey's novel follows six astronauts and cosmonauts through a single day on the International Space Station and is the first Booker winner set in space. It is published by Jonathan Cape.
For readers of speculative fiction, the result is a useful marker of how far literary prizes now look beyond conventional settings. The full shortlist, with extracts and reading guides, remains available on the Booker Prizes website.
